Why the need to nofollow links? Well it has been said affiliate links can jeapordise your website’s organic ranking, and it has even be said search engines can see them as paid links of all things. Here are some of Google’s now rather vague link guidelines. Not sure what I mean by nofollow? Check out this Wikipedia page, then come back
When to follow links
If visitors to your site make a comment on your post(s), why not reward them with a following link – they are after all adding content and interactivity with your post, which are positives right? If they write shit, just spam them. Those that have their own site/blog deserve a link back from your post comments right? Surely this is in the spirit of the web and linking the right way.
This is the plugin that switches follow on in your post comments (which by default will be nofollow boooo).
When to nofollow links
Well if you’ve got affiliate links, stick the nofollow attribute on them. Another reason to use nofollow is for paid-for links. If you’re nervous about Google ranking penalties, then you better add nofollow on these links. This can be done very easily if these links are in your blogroll or links list with this simple plugin.

If the links are in your post, you can manually add via ‘html view’ in the post editor rel=”nofollow” individually. Just make sure you never make the mistake of adding nofollow to the whole website, that would be very bad for you
and rather silly!
How to see follow and nofollow on the web
If you don’t want to get into the page source, just add this search plugin for Firefox.
Once installed, right click on the @ symbol in your status bar and click ‘Highlight nofollow’ (example result below) and pow! your affiliate and paid links should no longer be following, so you’re all safe from Google slapping the life out of your natural ranking.

VaultPress Beta Available for WordPress Backup
04.10.2010, 1 Comment, Hosting, News, Plugins, by admin.Vaultpress is a pretty straight forward plugin that once activated will backup your blog(s) so you never have to fear any catastrophe with your precious site, its content, and settings.

It is possibly going to cost $25 monthly to use, so it’s perhaps more suited to business use, or those who have a little cash to splash.
Vaultpress is a plugin to backup or restore WordPress
The latest version is now available for beta testing, here is the sign up page.
Release scheduled May 2010.
WP 3.0 is available in beta. Use with caution until it’s a stable release! (i.e. don’t install on a blog/site you care about at this stage – testing sites only!!). You can download it from WordPress here: http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0-beta1.zip
The new features look good so far. A better user interface, custom menu system and posting functionality, and a new default theme for 2010 (which no doubt you’ll swap straight out, but hey!):

It also has a bulk upgrade plugins in the plugins admin area, a new wp login form, and again a restyled admin area overall as is the tradition. Child theme support too should be bettered. Finally it’s worth mentioning that version 3.0 has WP and WP MU (multi user) merged to one.
As always the new release (once out of beta) should streamline the whole admin experience. Time to test! Or just relax and wait for it to land in the admin area soon.
Social Media Plugins for WordPress
Here are some of the best plugins that can help you integrate all of your social media campaigns into your WordPress blog. There are loads available of course, since social media is all the craze…but check out below only those that are generally bug free, easy to use and effective.
Twitter WordPress Plugins
Twitter Tools is a great tool that hooks up your WordPress blog and your Twitter account. New blog posts are automatically tweeted, with a standard introductory line of your choosing.
Twitter for WordPress has a neat sidebar widget, that shows your Twitter accounts latest tweets. Ace.
Social Bookmarking Plugins
These plugins take care of the Diggs, Stumbles, Facebooks and Reddits of the world, so there’s no need to have separate plugins for each social media network/platform.
Sociable / BlogPlay is a classic social plugin, tried, tested and excellent. Again it includes on posts or pages the option to share with the world. You just need some content worth sharing that inspires users to do that extra click.
Social Bookmarks gives a list of image links after each post (can be excluded according to page/post via admin area) to let visitors submit the post link to the usual suspects of social bookmarking/media websites. Pretty straight forward plugin, no configuration needed really (apart from activation!).
Share This and Add To Any fill a similar function to those previously shown, but try Social Bookmarking or Yoast’s Sociable before resorting to these last two, which can be a frustration when hovering over them for the user.
Social Media Performance
Social Traffic Monitor will let you know how many people are arriving to your site from social media platforms – broken down to the hour – which is handy if you submitted your latest post and want to monitor the impact relatively ‘live’.
Social Media Signup
WP Greetbox to welcome visitors from social platforms – a really great way to get email signups and feed followers.
Your Own Social Platform
BuddyPress is a great tool that lets you set up your own social network within your site. Relatively young in its life, but absolutely brilliant, easy to use and worth testing just to see how you could use it. Super modern look as well. Forget MyFace…
This list is by no means exhaustive, but a pretty fair start. Remember not to go overboard on social plugins, try them out, test the results. Too many social plugins can be a nuisance on a page, as well as slowing down page load speed.
That said, social media and blogging go from strength to strength – integration of the two has to be considered. Social integration also can bring life to a blog, with live updates from Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, or the others keeping visitors coming back.
